Who we are

The London Regional Public Health Group is part of the Department of Health and located in Richmond House, Whitehall.  We are working with NHS London, the Greater London Authority, London Councils and partners across the city to deliver a strengthened public health system for London – and to deliver the vision set out in the white paper Healthy Lives, Healthy People.  This includes supporting localities to maintain delivery and to continue to meet the needs of local communities during the current transition period

These pages contain a range of resources that RPHG has produced to support PCTs and local partners to tackle obesity in their areas.

We do this by supporting local areas

Obesity leads network

To support the continued work of our network of London PCT obesity leads, we have developed a dedicated Quickr file-sharing website.  The Quickr site allows colleagues to share data and intelligence; and to access, exchange and edit a range of practical resources.  Although originally designed for PCT leads, we anticipate that the site will also be useful for colleagues in London Boroughs, as they develop their public health function.  If you are interested in joining the network, please contact joanne.drake@dh.gsi.gov.uk

Developing and implementing local obesity strategies

Obesity care pathways

We have worked with the Public Health Action Support Team (PHAST) to develop a support package to help local areas develop, review or strengthen their care pathways for adult, childhood and maternal overweight and obesity.  The packages are available for download.

Database of weight management programmes

We have worked with the London Teaching Public Health Network to survey and learn from the provision of weight management programmes in London. A database of programmes running in London has been developed as part of the project in order to help local areas learn from each other. An updated version (March 2011) has also been published.  The database is complemented by a report produced by the LTPHN team of the survey findings, which also includes advice for commissioners.

Working with Hackney to review its healthy weight delivery plan

Early in 2010, we worked with Team Hackney to review the practical delivery challenges in implementing its healthy weight strategy. The case study details the process and lessons learned.

Supporting improved nutrition in the early years

London Infant Feeding Network (LIFN)

LIFN is a network of local infant feeding leads, which exists to support local areas to build on good rates of breastfeeding in the capital, and promote healthy infant feeding practices.  To enable the continued work of our network, we have developed a dedicated Quickr file-sharing website.  The Quickr site allows colleagues to share data and intelligence; and to access, exchange and edit a range of practical resources.  If you are interested in joining the network, please contact joanne.drake@dh.gsi.gov.uk

Early years tool

We have worked with local partners to bring together a wide range of practical guidance for health and childcare practitioners around healthy weight.

Healthy Start

Healthy Start is a UK-wide government scheme to improve the health of pregnant women and their families on benefits or low incomes. The Healthy Start scheme helps qualifiying women and families buy milk, fresh fruit and vegetables and infant formula milk; and provides women with free vitamin supplements.
