Learning Outcomes

Having completed these modules you will be able to:

  • Describe the prevalence of obesity in England,
  • Explain the impact of excess weight on health and wellbeing in adults and children,
  • Define overweight and obesity in adults and children,
  • Identify the health benefits of weight reduction in adults and weight maintenance in children,
  • Describe how to measure obesity in adults and children, and how to interpret the results of these measurements.
  • Describe medical, genetic or drug-related causes of obesity,
  • Explain when tests for comorbidities should be considered,
  • Describe some common factors contributing to lifestyle-related obesity in children,
  • Define the role of healthcare professionals, and how you can support individuals and families through an appropriate pathway of care,
  • Identify the lifestyle factors (nutrition and physical activity) where an individual and families could be supported to make changes,
  • Explain some of the key principles that enable behaviour change,
  • Raise the issue of weight sensitively with individuals,
  • Have a non-judgemental discussion with an individual which builds their readiness to change  behaviours linked to their weight status,
  • Describe the DH weight management initial steps, and how it supports behaviour change
    and local service provision.
